John Gamble (1863-1957)

John Gamble was born in New Jersey and first studied art in San Francisco at the School of Design. Following further study in Paris at the Academie Julian, Gamble moved back to San Francisco and opened a studio. When the 1906 earthquake destroyed his studio, Gamble moved south to Santa Barbara where he would remain for the rest of his life. While in Santa Barbara, Gamble’s Barbizon inspired palette gave way to brighter colors and more impressionistic techniques . Today Gamble is best remembered for his wildflower scenes with bright colors and vivid contrasts.
