 | | E. Charlton Fortune (1885-1969)E. Charlton Fortune was born in Sausalito, California in 1885. She began her art training at an early age in Edinburgh and London. Returning to San Francisco in 1905, Fortune continued her studies at the Mark Hopkins Institute and at the Art Students League in New York. Living off and on in California and Europe for thirty years between 1897-1927, Fortune earned great acclaim for her bright and vibrant landscape and harbor scenes. In the 1930’s, Fortune abandoned her easel painting to focus on works relating to Catholicism. Fortune joined a group of devout artists who painted more than 30 Catholic churches across America. E. Charlton Fortune died in Carmel in 1969.
